Since January 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) interactions have surged as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hired over 12,000 new agents and expanded its headcount to over 22,000. With this surge, DHS’ hiring practices and training standards have changed in ways that have considerably heightened the risks of violence and the disregard for protocols that protect civil rights. These heightened risks are especially challenging for nonprofits that serve children and families, as schools and daycares, food pantries and community centers, and social service organizations increasingly become targets for immigrant enforcement. Even religious organizations are targets.
In the face of this escalated risk, nonprofits are discovering that they must now revisit how they’ve been preparing for interactions with federal immigration enforcement agents.
This webinar recording, led by two attorneys specializing in nonprofit law, provides a critical roadmap for risk mitigation, including:
- How the current legal landscape is impacting nonprofits
- How to prepare your nonprofit for an interaction with ICE
- How to review your nonprofit’s I-9 compliance and prepare for potential I-9 audits and worksite visits (internal self-audits mitigate the risks of fines and penalties)
*PLEASE NOTE: This was an informational session, and no legal advice was given to attendees. Those seeking legal advice should engage legal counsel. Viewing this recording does not establish an attorney-client relationship with the presenters or their law firm, even if viewers ask questions and receive responses from the presenters.
